Amazon.com Review Remember the old, reliable Black & Decker drill your dad kept in his tool shop all those years ago? Other tools would come and go, but he always relied on that shiny silver drill to get the job done, and it did. Well, Black & Decker has brought back that classic styling with its commemorative, polished aluminum, 14.4-volt cordless drill/driver kit. This 85th-anniversary drill may look like a throwback to days gone by, but inside it's as 21st century as they come. An illuminated, electronic level ensures straighter, more accurate drilling. Microtorque adjustments allow the drill to handle a variety of applications. A single-sleeve keyless chuck with automatic spindle lock makes switching bits a breeze. The drill is powered by a matching 14.4-volt battery pack and features a rubber-enhanced grip for better comfort and control. A touch-sensitive trigger provides infinite speed control at either of two gear settings (0 to 350 and 0 to 1,100 rpm), and a rugged, nylon carrying case keeps the drill well protected when taking it on the job. --Carl Thress

Eight years and still going strong! July 3, 2010 W. Mears I picked this up at the Hopkinsville, KY K-Mart back in 2002. The box was torn to shreds and it was the only one I saw. Fortunately, it was also in the clearance section. I can't quite remember, but I think I paid about $30 for it. It was used very little until last year, but was always on standby when I needed it.
Flash forward to now; I am a homeowner and constantly doing small improvements. Black and Decker amazed me by still making compatible batteries. My old 7.2 and 8.4 Univolt drill has been trash for a while and I needed a backup battery to have on hand. A quick trip and $20-something dollars later and I had a drill I could use constantly. The charger recently died; no LED and doesn't work at all, so after I finish this review it's time for another trip to buy one. The original battery may be getting weak, it is hard to tell and I'll find out once it gets a full charge.
The downsides: it is a bit on the heavy side and the chuck is hard to tighten enough, especially with smaller bits when drilling metal. Honestly, it is not much of an issue and hand tightening the chuck usually works.
The upsides: eight years and still going, B&D still makes batteries and chargers for it, powerful enough to handle most of my projects.
I realize these are no longer made, but if the standard 14.4 drill is anywhere near as reliable, get it. If you happen upon one of these at the right price, I highly recommend it. It is unique looking and great for the average homeowner despite its quirks.
Looks great, great ergonomics, March 5, 2008 R. Mardis (Texas) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I see some of the bad reviews have to do with batteries issues, I've had this drill now for two years and have had NO issues with charge times or duration. I bought a spare battery at a local Hardware shop on sale so I have two.
I couldn't be more satisfied with this drill. The look is great. The ergonomics in the hand are very good. The balance is great. The features are excellent. I use this drill as my primary cordless around the house and I strongly endorse it.
I've had no problems with it, but obviously some have so, who knows what the deal there is. I'm very happy with mine.
(also own a Dewalt 12 V, a BD 9 volt, and a BD 18 V- which I never use because it wouldn't hold a charge )
JUNK,JUNK,JUNK!!!!! June 23, 2007 oldizz 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This thing weighs a ton. The chuck does not stay tightened. It does not hold a charge very long. Overall, heavy and awkward. The forward reverse button is not in a user friendly position. The battery is released with a button latch at the rear of the grip. Ooops.... there goes your battery sliding down and tumbling off of the roof again. Yes,very poor design on the battery release. Any slight bump or pressure against it and the battery comes out. This drill came with 2 screwbits. One broke right away. The phillips end cracked off during use. I expected a little more durability from the way it looks. I will recycle the metal. Don't buy!!!!
Buying a drill?... buy something else. March 12, 2004 Thomas J. Wilson (Alliston, Ontario CANADA) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Buying a potential collectors item?... buy this. I must admit I had a rush of nostalgia when I saw this drill (I had one of the originals and it literally served me for decades before I finally killed it), and I raced out a bought one (for considerably more money than it is offered here). Athough it looks like the original, all comparisons should stop there, and as a drill I must say this was a major disappointment. First, the chuck is the cheapest chuck I have ever had on any drill at anytime. I defy anyone to get it tight enough to hold drill bits without slipping in use, on driver bits and holders it's fine. Second, if I had a nickle for everytime I've pinched my finger in the trigger I wouldn't need to worry about making a living using tools. Hard to explain but there is a gap between the metal case and the plastic trigger, and when you pull the trigger the gap opens, and when you let the trigger go my finger is generally in that gap... youch! And finally, the drill cannot stand on it's battery it must be laid down flat. All it would have taken to rectify this was a miniscule adjustment of the angle of the battery to the handle. When I bought the fore-father of this "look-alike" Black and Decker made industrial quality tools for use and abuse on a daily basis, today they make "consumer products" that happen to include "tools". This drill is a classic example of the poorly designed, poorly made in China junk B&D now try and fob off as real tools. If you want a drill for daily use, buy something else, if you want something that is a potential collectors item buy this. But don't make the same mistake as I did and take it out of the package and use it... it then becomes worthless as both a tool and as a collectors item.
Black@ Decker 14.4 Anniversery Drill. November 4, 2003 Barrie Dale (London Ont Canada) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have had the oppertunity to use this drill a number of times in the past week and use it many as a secondary unit when I am using more than one drill at a time. When I am drilling and filling woodholes with screws I don't like to change out my bits so I find it is very good for putting in screws and does take somewhat of a licking. Good value for the money.
